Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Safe?
Jiu Jitsu is one of the few self-defense martial arts you can train daily and fully engage with a training partner safely. Other martial arts only allow so much physical contact and as such have a limited amount of “real world” sparring time. In Jiu Jitsu, we can train hard daily as we’re not intentionally taking blows to the head. However, this is a sport and like anything in life, and especially sports, there is always a risk of injury. Safety is a top priority for us but not all injuries are avoidable. Our saying is the most important person on the mat is your training partner. We train hard but safety is always priority #1.
For us older grapplers, the risk of injuries while being active, learning self-defense, and gaining all of the benefits of Jiu-Jitsu far outweigh a life of inactivity or other sports.
Can I wear my own Gi?
Yes! As long as your Gi is white, blue, black, or pink, you are free to wear it. If it has patches from another school, no big deal, come train with us.
Do I need to wear a rash guard?
Yes. We require a rash guard for all Gi and No Gi training. You are free to wear whatever rash guard you’d like just as long as it’s family-friendly.
I travel and like to train on the road, are you affiliated with any other schools I can train at while on the road?
We do not have a school affiliation but don’t be fooled, you can easily train on the road. 90% of Jiu-Jitsu schools are extremely welcoming to visitors and/or drop-ins for training. Simply reach out to the school you’d like to visit ahead of time and let them know you’d like to train. We’ve yet to see a school not welcome visitors in any of our travels.
Do I have to compete at tournaments if I want to train at Rio?
Absolutely not. While we do have many students (kids and adults) that compete, our gym is focused on Jiu-Jitsu skills, self-defense, and the many physical, mental, and emotional benefits of training Jiu-Jitsu. Competing is great, but no pressure at all to compete.
Can I keep my same belt and rank?
Yes, for sure. When you come train with us you keep your belt and rank. Jiu-Jitsu is a path and we’ll honor your journey.
